Kentucky unemployment rate http://wkyufm.org en Jobless Numbers Fall Overall, But Remain Stubbornly High in Some Kentucky Counties http://wkyufm.org/post/jobless-numbers-fall-overall-remain-stubbornly-high-some-kentucky-counties <p>Several counties in our listening area continue to post unemployment rates below the statewide level.&nbsp; The January jobs numbers have been released by the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.<br /><br />Simpson County’s unemployment rate was 6.7 percent, as compared to the 8.3 percent mark for the state.&nbsp; County Judge Executive Jim Henderson says Simpson County has come a long way since 2008-2009, when the auto industry felt the effects of the recession.<br /><br />“That pendulum swings both ways because, actually, automotive sales are now back at record levels and improving. That’s where some of that growth is occurring here is in the automotive industry," said Henderson. &nbsp; "But, diversification is really important for a community, so we’re not dependent on one sector of the economy to do well.”<br /><br />A check of other counties in the area shows Warren County’s unemployment rate was at seven percent in January. The Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet released figures Thursday comparing each county’s jobless rate from June of 2012 to June of this year.</p><p>Overall, the state’s jobless rate rose to 8.9% from 8.6%</p><p>Warren County’s jobless rate this June was up .8 of a percent to 8%.</p><p>In Daviess County, the unemployment figure increased half-a-percentage point to 7.9%.</p><p>Hardin County saw a jobless rate of 8.3% this June, up slightly from last year.</p><p>Pulaski County’s unemployment rate stood at 10.1%&nbsp; in June, up 0.7% from last year.</p><p>The current jobless figures in those four counties all exceed the national unemployment rate of 7.8% Thu, 25 Jul 2013 20:57:03 +0000 WKU Public Radio News 34572 at http://wkyufm.org More than Two-Thirds of Kentucky's Counties Saw Jobless Rates Rise from Last Year Kentucky Unemployment Rate on the Rise http://wkyufm.org/post/kentucky-unemployment-rate-rise <p>Huge job losses in manufacturing and several other key sectors pushed Kentucky's unemployment rate to 8.4 percent in June.</p><p>The Office of Employment and Training released the latest numbers on Thursday, showing the manufacturing sector lost 3,200 jobs in June.</p><p>The education and health services sector, another of several big losers, was down 1,500 jobs. The trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 1,200 jobs. The professional and business services sector shrunk by 900 jobs. And the construction sector was down 700 jobs.</p><p>Seasonal hiring bolstered the leisure and hospitality sector, which added 7,700 jobs.
