farmers markets http://wkyufm.org en Letcher County Farmer's Market Designated USDA “Summer Feeding” Site, Becoming First in State http://wkyufm.org/post/letcher-county-farmers-market-designated-usda-summer-feeding-site-becoming-first-state <p>An Eastern Kentucky farmer’s market has become the first in the state to be &nbsp;designated a “Summer Feeding Site” by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.<br /><br />As part of a joint effort led by the Community Farm Alliance, the program will provide farm-to-table meals free of charge to children under the age of 18 &nbsp;during summer break.</p><p>The program also aims to shore up business among local farmers by providing them with a steady source of income, and to improve community health.</p><p>According to U.S. Census data, about a quarter of Letcher County’s 23,600 residents live below the federal poverty line.</p><p>The CFA will celebrate the announcement July 26.<br /> Wed, 16 Jul 2014 23:56:00 +0000 Jonathan Meador 51183 at http://wkyufm.org Letcher County Farmer's Market Designated USDA “Summer Feeding” Site, Becoming First in State Bowling Green Farmers Market to Cater to Lower Income Areas, Set up Market on Wheels http://wkyufm.org/post/bowling-green-farmers-market-cater-lower-income-areas-set-market-wheels <p></p><p>Bowling Green area farmers set up shop outside the Barren River District Health Department Wednesday, in an effort to make nutritional food easily accessible to the community.</p><p>Farmers selling vegetables, eggs, meats, and cheeses set up their tents on the front lawn of the health department, and--within a few minutes--business was booming.</p><p>A group of local farmers is working to make their products accessible in low-income areas. The farmers used the health department Wednesday as a testing site to see how many consumers would be willing to turn out.</p><p></p><p>The farmers have purchased a bus with a USDA grant. The bus is being retrofitted to act as a traveling community farmers market. Starting in April, the bus will stop at various Bowling Green locations where access to fresh foods is limited.</p><p>The market will also accept forms of government assistance, and will become Kentucky's first farmers market on wheels.
