A federal judge in Nashville will allow opponents of a Murfreesboro mosque to have a say in the religious freedom case involving the building. Judge Kevin Sharp on Wednesday ruled that the group of neighbors has a legitimate interest in the case.

The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro has received its final approval after a nearly two-year legal battle to prevent it from opening. Islamic Center board chairman Essam Fathy said he was relieved and happy the mosque has its permanent occupancy permit.

Gov. Bill Haslam's administration is responding to what it calls "confusion" about the role of a Muslim staffer and a council that has advised two state departments on Islamic affairs. A team of Rutherford County, Tennessee building code inspectors has been inside a Murfreesboro mosque today. That move is part of the process for granting the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro a certificate of occupancy, which was ordered yesterday by a U.S. District Court judge in Nashville.
