A convicted drug trafficker from Honduras who won a 2010 U.S. Supreme Court ruling will get a new trial after a Kentucky appeals court overturned his conviction because his attorney gave bad advice about deportation. The Kentucky Court of Appeals has ordered a new trial for Jose Padilla, a native of Honduras and permanent legal resident of the United States.
A school bus full of middle school students overturned when it was hit by a car in southwest Louisville Friday morning, but no students were seriously injured. Louisville police says the bus was headed to Frost Middle School around 7:00 am when a Mustang skidded on the wet road and struck the bus at an intersection. There were 48 children on board the bus and all were transported to Louisville hospitals with what were described as "minor injuries."
Eight Civil War battlefields, including three in Kentucky and Tennessee, are receiving more than $2.4 million in grants to help with land acquisition. The National Park Service said the grant money will help in the permanent preservation and protection of the battlefields. This year marks the 150 year anniversary of several important Civil War battles.
A Middle Tennessee school system is apparently not getting a large increase in students, which was a focus in a budget fight. The Sumner County schools delayed opening for 10 days this month as the school board and the Sumner County Commission deadlocked over more education funding.
