Indiana Man Latest to Receive Hand Transplant in Louisville

Surgeons at Louisville’s Jewish Hospital have performed another hand transplant. Fifty-six year old Ronald Thurman of Marion, Indiana became the eighth recipient of a hand transplant at Jewish in a 15-and-a-half hour operation that ended early Thursday morning.

Kentucky Lawmakers to Consider Plan to Boost Number of Kids in Public Preschool

Governor Steve Beshear is urging state lawmakers to approve a budget proposal that would raise the income eligibility level for public preschool to 160 percent of the federal poverty rate.

Preschool in Kentucky is currently offered to 4-year-olds whose family income is 150 percent of the federal poverty level or less. Children with developmental delays or disabilities are also eligible. Beshear says more kids need to get an early start in school.

Kentucky to get Nearly $60 Million from Mortgage Agreement

A nationwide foreclosure settlement with five major mortgage lenders means thousands of Kentuckians will receive direct payments, loan modifications, or principal write-downs. Kentucky was one of the last states to agree to the $25 billion deal with Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi, and Ally Financial. Attorney General Jack Conway says the Commonwealth will receive $58.8 million of the settlement.

Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee to Get No Child Left Behind Waiver

Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee have been granted a waiver from federal No Child Left Behind education standards. NCLB has been criticized for setting unreachable goals for education. Kentucky was one of 11 states that applied for the waiver last fall and promised to make other commitments to school reform.
