160 Sumitomo Workers Will Lose Jobs in Scottsville

By Dan Modlin

Bowling Green, KY – Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems has announced that
it will discontinue cable reel manufacturing at its
Smith Grove Road location in Scottsville, Kentucky.
The change will result in the loss of about 160 jobs
between March and September of 2004.

Executive Vice President David Jean says Sumitomo's
parent companies have decided to get out of cable
reel production. He says a much larger customer base
is needed to fund the technology necessary to
remain competitive.

The Injection Molding and Stamping facility located
in Scottsville will not be impacted by the change.
Company officials say employment levels at the
cable reel facility will decrease until the plant closes
in September of next year.
