BBB Warns of Consumer On-Line Scams

By Dan Modlin

Louisville, KY – The Better Business Bureau of Louisville, Southern Indiana, and
Western Kentucky is urging consumers to beware of some new
on-line scams. Group spokesperson Sara Rolfingsmeier says
"phishing" is the term used to describe unscrupulous e-mail
practices which are designed to trick consumers into
revealing bank account numbers or credit card information.

Rolfingsmeier says some recent scams have made use
of authentic-appearing logos from well-known retailers or
even the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. BBB officials
say consumers should be very careful not to share personal
identification numbers with unknown persons or organizations.

Consumers who want to report suspicious e-mail
activity can contact the BBB at 1-800-388-2222.
