Black Water Spill Investigations Underway

By Dan Modlin

Bowling Green, KY – A Pike County coal company has been cited
for alledgedly causing a black water spill that
fouled more than eight miles of an eastern
Kentucky creek. The Environmental and Public
Protection Cabinet has issued a Notice of
Non-compliance and an Imminent Danger
Cessation Order to the Johns Creek Processing
Company.

The company was cited for allowing black water
to leave a permitted area and for failing to report
the spill in a timely manner.

Cabinet Secretary LaJuana Wilcher has appointed
a Task Force to study a series of recent black
water incidents. In an interview with Western's
Public Radio, Wilcher said she is encouraged by
the interest she has seen in addressing the issue,
from environmental groups and from coal companies.
