Botanical Gardens in Owensboro Planting "Elvis" Tree

A pin oak tree is being planted at the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden in memory of Elvis Presley on the 35th anniversary of his death. The tree was donated by Nancy Brown, who told the Messenger-Inquirer  she picked up a handful of acorns on one of her many visits to Graceland.

She gave them to a volunteer at the botanical garden, who helped six to sprout.

One of the seedlings, which is about 18 inches tall, will be planted Thursday and join other trees at the garden named after famous people, including a Casey Jones willow oak and a Sir Isaac Newton apple tree.

Volunteer gardener Barbara Russ, who will help plant the tree, says she'll wear her Elvis skirt and scarf for the occasion.
