Cell Phone Tower May Soon be Built at Mammoth Cave

By AP/Dan Modlin

Mammoth Cave, Ky. – Park Managers at Mammoth Cave National Park
are proposing the first cellular tower in the 83 square
mile park. The 185 foot tower would be built by
Bluegrass Cellular of Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Park officials believe the tower would improve safety
for the park's two million annual visitors, who now have
spotty cell phone service when using the park's trails
and campgrounds. Park spokesman Jim Carroll says
people with health problems or injuries could get help
more quickly, if cell phone service was improved.

However, Louisville environmental attorney Leslie Barras
says there is insufficient justification for putting the tower
in the park. Barras says the country's national parks are
"our top treasures."
