More than half of Kentucky's public high school students last year were not prepared for college or careers based on the results of an assessment released Friday. Despite that alarming finding, Education Commissioner Terry Holliday said the results showing that 47 percent of high schoolers are ready to advance are a significant improvement over the previous year's 38 percent.

"This increase is a direct result of Kentucky's schools' and districts' focus on college and career readiness," Holliday said. "The overriding goal of the state's public education system is to prepare students for the paths they want to take after high school, and these data show that we are making progress toward that goal."

Of the more than 43,000 high school students who received diplomas last spring, 18,741 were deemed college ready and 3,413 career ready. That's up from 15,056 found to be college ready and 1,142 career ready the previous year.
