Congressional Candidates Trade Accusations

Louisville – Incumbent Congresswoman Anne Northup and Democratic challenger Jack Conway exchanged a few jabs during their televised debate in Louisville. The Third Congressional District candidates appeared on Kentucky Educational Television last night.

Northup attacked Conway's recent tenure as Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Patton. She accused Frankfort official's of spending the state surplus without making improvements and setting the pace that led to the current fiscal problems. Conway defended his work at the state capital, saying the government spent money on wiring elementary school classrooms and gave teachers a cost of living adjustment.

Conway attacked Northup for voting the Republican party line during her time in Washington. The Democrat also denounced a Northup campaign ad, saying it falsely claims he favors raising the retirement age and reducing benefits for seniors.
