Crews Continue Clean-Up Efforts at Site of Kentucky Train Derailment

Crews are continuing efforts to move tanker cars near a chemical fire at the site of a train derailment in Louisville. Louisville MetroSafe spokeswoman Jody Duncan said Saturday that some cars have already been moved away from the site, but workers decided to delay relocating tankers containing the dangerous chemical hydrogen fluoride until debris from the derailment could be cleaned up.

An evacuation order for a 1.2 mile area around the site in southwestern Jefferson County remained in place.

The evacuation was ordered Wednesday when workers using a cutting torch to separate train cars that derailed on Monday ignited chemical vapors from one of the tankers, which continues to burn.

Officials have said the hydrogen fluoride cars, which are near the burning car, pose the biggest threat of danger.
