Daniel Mongiardo Considering Run for Kentucky Governorship

Former Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo says he's considering a run to become the state's top elected official. Mongiardo, a Democrat who served as lieutenant governor during Gov. Steve Beshear's first term, told the Lexington Herald-Leader in an interview on Friday that he is "looking at" running for the state's top post in three years.

The 52-year-old physician from Hazard served in the state Senate from 2001-2007. He ran for U.S. Senate, but lost the 2004 general election to the incumbent, Republican Jim Bunning, and the Democratic primary in 2010.

Beshear chose another running mate in 2009 because Mongiardo was seeking the U.S. Senate seat.

Mongiardo says Secretary of State Allison Lundergan Grimes has the attributes he would look for in a running mate.
