Defensive Effort Leads WKU Men's Basketball Over Brescia

WKU Athletics

A stingy WKU defense held Brescia (Ky.) without a field goal for 13:16 at one point Saturday night at E.A. Diddle Arena, helping the Hilltoppers improve to 4-2 on the season with a 74-46 win over the Bearcats. WKU limited Brescia to just 11 field goals in the game and only four inside the three-point line.

The Hilltoppers outrebounded the Bearcats 53-30 and forced 15 turnovers. Brescia drops to 2-6 on the season.

Aleksejs Rostov had a career high 16 points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes Saturday night, and Jamal Crook led WKU in scoring for the fifth time this season with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. T.J. Price and Teeng Akol were also in double figures for the Hilltoppers with 14 and 11, respectively. Myron Christian led Brescia with 15 points.

All 13 available Hilltoppers saw action in the game, with freshmen Eddie Alcantara and Percy Blade scoring their first career points in the contest.

WKU led 34-25 at halftime, thanks in part to hitting its first seven two-point field goals of the game and holding the Bearcats without a two-pointer in the first 20 minutes. Brescia ended up missing its first 18 two-point field goal attempts of the game.

Leading 36-26 early in the second half, WKU cushioned its lead with a 9-0 run to take a 45-26 advantage, and from there it was all Hilltoppers.

WKU led by as many as 31 en route to the 28-point victory in front of a crowd of 4,062.

Despite winning by 28 and shooting 44.6 percent for the game (25-for-56), WKU made just one three-point field goal in 21 attempts Saturday night (.048).

The Hilltoppers begin Sun Belt Conference play next week at ULM and Troy. Both games will be televised by the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network, airing locally on WKYU-PBS and nationally on ESPN3. Thursday's game against ULM will also be on ESPN Full Court, and the availability of Saturday's game against Troy on ESPN Full Court will be announced early next week.

The games will also be broadcast on the radio on the Hilltopper IMG Sports Network with Randy Lee and Hal Schmitt on the call.

WKU returns home on December 5 at 7:00 PM against Southern Illinois.
