Delta Airlines is shutting down its 35 year old carrier known as Comair, effective at the end of September. Delta says it is switching to larger jets and has sent termination notices to employees, including some 700 who live in Kentucky.
Comair had reduced service to 290 flights per day.More than 1,000 of the carrier's remaining workers are in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Region. Delta says the smaller regional planes are expensive to fly because they lack fuel-efficiency and cost more to maintain as the fleet ages.
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear issued a statement, calling the announcement, "terribly disappointing." He said the terminations will have a significant impact on families in northern Kentucky.
