Governor Steve Beshear has ordered that flags fly at half staff at all state office buildings in Kentucky today, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day. The flags will be at half staff from sunrise to sunset in the Commonwealth.
Peace Officer Memorial Day is held in conjunction with Police Week activities. Peace Officer Memorial Day recognizes all state, local, and federal law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. The national recognition was established in 1961, when Congress asked President Kennedy to designate May 15th to honor peace officers. The FBI says more than 70 officers were killed in the line of duty in the United States last year, however that total more than doubles when the number of officers killed in accidents is included.
