Former U.S. Senator Wendell Ford is weighing in on the 6th District congressional race, telling regulars at the Lexington Senior Citizens Center that they need to re-elect Democratic Rep. Ben Chandler to help protect Medicare.
Ford, a former Kentucky governor who served 24 years in Washington, said preserving Medicare is the biggest issue in the Nov. 6 election. He said Chandler could be trusted to do his part to preserve the program.
Chandler faces a challenge from Republican Andy Barr, a Lexington attorney, who says he, too, is a champion for Medicare.
Chandler and Barr are engaged in what is expected to be Kentucky's most competitive general election congressional race. Barr sought a rematch with Chandler after losing a squeaker to him two years ago.
