Former WKU Coach Jack Harbaugh Back on the Hill to be Honored

Kevin Willis

It's not every day you run into a national championship-winning football coach. Jack Harbaugh and his wife, Jackie, are on WKU's campus Friday ahead of Saturday night's game against Southern Miss. The two will be honored before the game in an on-the-field ceremony.

Coach Harbaugh led the WKU football team from 1989-2002, winning the 1-AA national championship in his final season.

He spoke to WKU Public Radio today about how far the football program has come since he was here. When asked if he ever thought WKU would beat an SEC opponent like it did last weekend against Kentucky, Harbaugh was blunt.

"To be honest with you, no," he said. "The times when we were here, it was just trying to keep your head above water, so to speak. We didn't have much time to think ahead and be visionary, I guess."

WKU will honor the 2002 national championship team and the 1992 team at halftime of Saturday's game.

Check out our audio link above to hear Coach Harbaugh tell WKU Public Radio about what it's like to be back on the Hill, the impact of the win against Kentucky, and how he thinks that game is more important even than the 2002 national championship victory against McNeese State.

Kevin is the News Director at WKU Public Radio. He has been with the station since 1999, and was previously the Assistant News Director, and also served as local host of Morning Edition.
