Fort Knox – More than 3,000 soldiers at Fort Knox are headed overseas this month. The Third Brigade Combat Team will spend a year in eastern Afghanistan. It's a volatile region along the border with Pakistan, where the mountainous terrain presents challenges, says Brigade Commander Colonel Chris Toner.

"A lot of small villages out in a very rural environment, not a lot built up in terms of roads and those things, literacy rate is about 30 percent literate."

WKU Public radio recently had the chance to speak indepth with Colonel Toner about the upcoming mission.
