Ft. Campbell Fatality May Be "Friendly Fire"
Fort Campbell, KY – Two members of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell have died
An Army spokesman at Ft. Campbell says 48 year old SFC James Hayes
of Barstow, CA was killed Friday when his humvee hit a roadside bomb while
on patrol. The Defense Department says Hayes' death occurred Sunday.
Ft. Campbell said 24 year old SSG Jason Fegler of Virginia Beach, VA also
died Friday during combat operations in Baghdad. His death is under
investigation as a potential friendly fire incident.
Hays was a cannon crewmember and had been in the Army since 1984
and at Ft. Campbell since March 2003, his second stint there. He is
survived by his wife, Kathy, and three daughters of Clarksville, a daughter
in Barstow and a son in Louisville.
Fegler was an infantryman who joined the Army in July 2000 and arrived
at Fort Campbell last January. He is survived by his wife, Shianne, and a
two year old son, Aiden, both of Virginia Beach.
Memorial services will be held for Hayes and Fegler in Iraq.
Their deaths are the 8th and 9th fatalities for the 101st last week in Iraq.
