Leitchfield, KY – A bizarre accident in a church parking lot has resulted in the death of a six year old girl and life threatening injuries to her four year old brother and their father.
State police say 86 year old Joseph Grant of Leitchfield was trying to back his pickup truck out of a parling space at St. Joseph's Catholic Church parking lot Sunday when he accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.
The truck raced backwards some 90 feet into 41 year old James Pierce and his two children as they stood outside their car and also crashed into the car itself. Deputy coroner Jack Arnold says Kaitlyn Beth Pierce died at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville Sunday afternoon.
James Pierce and his four year old son, Ethan, are in critical condition. The father is at the University of Louisville Hospital and Ethan is at Kosair.
James Pierce's wife Jacqueline witnessed the accidnt but was not injured.
