A former social worker for the Hardin County Schools has left a $2.42 million endowment for college scholarships there. The News-Enterprise reports Charley Nell Llewellyn’s gift is expected to generate about $100,000 a year and is the largest philanthropic gift in the county’s history.
The scholarships are need-based and can be used at any college or university.
Another $1 million will eventually be added to the endowment, adding an additional $40,000-$50,000 for scholarships each year.
Friend and co-worker Judy Lay said Llewellyn was dedicated to helping students and families and found creative ways to raise money to assist them.
The endowment is administered by the Central Kentucky Community Foundation.
