The WKU Hilltopper basketball team overcame a sixteen point deficit in the second half to defeat Mississippi Valley State, and will advance to play top seeded Kentucky.
The Hilltoppers tied the game at 54 to 54 in the closing minutes Tuesday night before taking a three point lead with thirty seconds left in the game. It was a low-scoring contest marked by pressure defense and multiple turnovers. A last-second two-pointer by Mississippi Valley State went through the basket just as the game clock expired, with the Hilltoppers holding on to win 59 to 58.
The game was played in Dayton, Ohio, and President Barack Obama was among those in attendance.
Ray Harper's Hilltoppers had advanced to the NCAA by defeating North Texas in the championship game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. WKU now advances to play Kentucky in a game to be played at Louisville.
