I-R-S Has New Requirements For Tax Preparers

Bowling Green – The Internal Revenue Service is contacting more than 13,000 Kentucky tax preparers. Beginning next year, IRS spokeswoman Jodie Reynolds says each person must include their tax preparer ID number on every form they submit.

"In the past we would give these numbers to preparers if they wanted it so that way they didn't have to use their own social security number to identify themselves on the tax returns but now it's a requirement if you're going to be a paid tax return preparer you must have a tax preparer identification number," said Reynolds.

She adds that's just the beginning of a crackdown on the industry.

"We are going to start requiring education and even testing to ensure that paid preparers know how to prepare a tax return and are very familiar with all the tax laws," said Reynolds.

In the tax year 2008, Kentuckians filed 1.8 million federal returns. Of that number some 1.1 million were signed by a paid tax return preparer.
