The Impact of Meth on Our Region
This entry in the Series category for the 2013 PRNDI awards contains three stories that aired during 2012 that detail the toll meth is having on our region in general, and the Glasgow-Barren County area in particular.
The first story you'll hear features the accounts of law enforcement officials who describe what it's like to encounter those who are high on meth. Virtually all of those I spoke to for my reports said meth addicts are the most dangerous and violent suspects they encounter--people who are willing to do anything to escape arrest, regardless of who is put in harm's way.
The second story explains why meth is so much more addictive than other drugs.
The third story looks at the impact treating meth burns is having on our medical system. A surgeon at a major burn unit in the region told us that compared to most other burn injuries, it takes more resources and time to treat meth cooks who have hurt themselves while making the drug.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this series of reports.
