Investigation Underway in Mining Fatality
The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing is investigating the death of a miner killed in Pike County. State officials say an accident occurred shortly before noon Monday at the McCoy Elkhorn Coal Corporation Mine Number 23.
According to preliminary reports, 33 year old Farley Sargent was laying track when a portion of a coal pillar wall fell into a corridor.
Officials with the Office of Mine Safety and Licensing say this is the second mining fatality in the Commonwealth so far in 2012. A miner was killed in March while trying to repair a canopy that collapsed.
