Jockey Wants Libel Case Kept In Kentucky

Louisville, KY – Jockey Jose Santos has asked that his libel case against the Miami Herald and other defendants remain in federal court in Kentucky.
Santos made the request in a filing this month in US District Court in Louisville, where he filed the lawsuit in May. Santos, who rode "Funny Cide" to victory in last year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, sued the newspaper, its parent compant Knight-Ridder and several of the newspaper's employees for $48 million.
Stewards investigated the finish of last year's Derby after a photograph and story in the newspaper in May 2003 raised questions about whether Santos might have carried an illegal device in his right hand when he crossed the finish line.
