Kentucky House Passes Controversial Budget

By AP/Dan Modlin

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky House has passed a state budget
bill that was opposed by every Republican member
of the House. The measure passed by a 64 to 36
margin.

Governor Fletcher's Administration charges that
House Speaker Jody Richards broke a promise to
secure funding for a technical school wanted by
Magna, which has announced plans to locate
at the Kentucky Tri-Modal Transpark in northern
Warren County. However, Speaker Richards counters
that he would do nothing to jeopardize the project,
which could potentially create more than one thousand
jobs. Richards says the budget delays the project for
six months.

Speaker Richards is a Democrat from Bowling Green.
He says the changes the House has made to the
Fletcher budget are designed to restore funding to
education and to "put people ahead of projects."

The measure now heads to the Republican-controlled
State Senate.
