Kentucky LRC Ordered to Pay Legal Fees of Plantiffs

A judge has ruled that the Legislative Research Commission is responsible for legal fees incurred by lawmakers who successfully challenged how legislative districts were redrawn during this year's Kentucky General Assembly.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip J. Shepherd issued the order Tuesday and directed parties in the lawsuit to begin negotiating the total amount due.

The Kentucky Supreme Court ruled in favor of House Republicans and Democratic state Sen. Kathy Stein of Lexington, who challenged the redistricting maps approved by lawmakers, saying they weren't properly drawn.

The General Assembly agreed to pay the LRC's $19,758 legal bill to defend the lawsuit earlier this year.

Lawmakers are expected to revisit redistricting next year
