Louisville Firefighters Owed Millions in Overtime Pay

By AP

Louisville, KY – A Jefferson County judge gas ruled that officials miscalculated the pay of Louisville firefighters incorrectly for years. Judge Lisabeth Hughes Abramson says Louisville metro government owes millions of dollars in overtime to firefighters.
The firefighters sued the old city of Louisville for failing to calculate their overtime based on their total salaries, rather than their base pay. The exact amount of back pay owed is still being determined.
A spokesman for metro mayor Jerry Abramson said city officials may appeal.
Judge Abramson's ruling applies to overtime pay from 1995 through 2001. But a lawyer representing retired firefighters says the judge will be asked to apply federal contract laws that would allow overtime back pay dating to 1985.
