Nearly Half of Kentucky's Waterways Unsafe

By AP

Louisville, KY – Environmental officials say 47% of Kentucky rivers and streams are so polluted or altered that the water is not considered safe for swimming or drinking.
Sometimes they fail to support enough aquatic life. That level si up from 35% in 2000 and 44% in 2002. Despite the worsening numbers state officials warn against the public concluding that water quality is declining.
Officials say the increase is due to surveying more streams and improved methods of surveying. The report also found that kentucky lakes are in better shape.
