New Student-Produced Documentary Examines Different Sides of Public Pension Controversy

Ryland Barton

A Kentucky college student has produced a documentary about the saga surrounding the recent passage of a new public pension law, and the loud protests of public school teachers who opposed the measure.

The 25 minute documentary is called 151, a reference to the bill number of the controversial pension law.

The Herald-Leader reports it was produced by Asbury sophomore John Bowling, and recent University of Kentucky graduate Sawyer Holcomb.

The two grew up together in Laurel County and had similar interests in storytelling and technology.

Bowling says the goal of the documentary was to present as an objective as possible view of the arguments for and against the pension changes.

The documentary includes interviews with Republican Governor Matt Bevin, Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear, several state lawmakers, and teachers who showed up at the state capitol to protest the bill.

The award-winning news team at WKU Public Radio consists of Dan Modlin, Kevin Willis, Lisa Autry, and Joe Corcoran.
