Officials Figuring Out Next Steps Following Train Derailment

Federal, state, and local agencies are meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the progress made so far in cleaning up Monday’s train derailment in southwestern Jefferson County. The derailment, which occurred near the northern Hardin County line, involved a toxic chemical spill.

The officials are meeting to talk about the possible reopening of Dixie Highway, the return of displaced residents to their homes, and the cleanup of the hazardous materials that spilled out of the train cars that went off the tracks early Monday morning.

Dixie Highway is expected to remain closed in southern Jefferson County until Wednesday. A Pleasure Ridge Park fire department official says the mandatory evacuation of a dozen homes would likely remain in effect until tomorrow.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
