Remains of Kentucky Soldier Killed in Vietnam Returned Home

The remains of a Louisville soldier who has been missing since the Vietnam War have been identified and will be buried this week in Arlington National Cemetery. The Defense Department says Army Sgt. John R. Jones will be buried Thursday with full military honors.

Jones was part of a U.S. team working with indigenous commandos to defend a radio-relay base in South Vietnam on June 4, 1971.

The military says enemy forces attacked the site, and Jones and another soldier took cover in a nearby bunker. The next morning, Jones was reportedly killed and the other soldier was taken prisoner and held until 1973.

Scientists used DNA and other tools to identify the remains.
