The Associated Press reports that seventeen states, including Tennessee, have established sales tax holidays for back to school purchases. The states provide temporary tax breaks on back to school items such as clothes, notebook paper, pencils, and ---in some states---computers.
On August 4th and 5th, sales tax holiday weekends are being held in a number of states, including North Carolina, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, and Tennessee. The tax breaks range from state to state, but apply in most areas to items that are actually used at school. The President of the Alabama Retail Association says stores see an influx of shoppers during the special weekends, and many report a major boost in retail sales.
