State Veterinarian Wilson Is Fired

By AP

Frankfort, KY – A release from the office of Kentucky's Environmental and Protection secretary says state horse racing veterinarian Gary Wilson has been fired.
Cabinet secretary LaJuana Wilcher says a letter dismissing Wilson was sent last week and was effective Friday. Cabinet spokesman Chuck Wolfe says he can't discuss reasons for the decision.
Nancy Davis has been named acting chief vet. She's a veterinarian with 30 years experience with the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority and its predecessor.
Wilson was dismissed after comments by him a month ago that staffing and funding for the Horse Racing Authority's veterinary program are so limited that the welfare of horses is at risk.
Wilson also said he received assurances from the Racing Authority that his concerns would be addressed but had seen no hint of action.
