U-T Player's Case to go to Grand Jury

By AP

Knoxville – The legal problems for members of the University of
Tennessee football team are continuing. A Knox County
judge has sent the felony assault case against Defensive
Tackle Tony McDaniel to a grand jury. Judge Chuck Cerny
turned aside a defense request that the charge be reduced
to a misdemeanor assault.

McDaniel was charged after an incident during a pickup
basketball game in January. Student Edward Goodrich
has testified that he was punched and the injuries
required surgery. He told the court his face was broken
in four places as a result of the incident.

McDaniel is charged with aggravated assault. He is one of
eleven University of Tennessee football players who have
been either arrested or cited for crimes ranging from
aggravated assault to underage drinking in the past
fourteen months.
