WKU Lady Hilltoppers Overcome Big Deficit, Win at Flordia Atlantic

WKU overcame a 13-point deficit as sophomore Alexis Govan scored a game-high 31 points to lead WKU to a 64-61 win over FAU on Wednesday night at the FAU Arena.

WKU (18-6, 11-4) overcame a deficit of eight points or more for the third time in conference play to win this season, trailing 17-4 in the opening minutes after going over five minutes without scoring. With its 18th win in 2012-13, WKU has doubled the number of wins it compiled a year ago.

Govan hit 14-of-25 from the field and grabbed six rebounds in 34 minutes as she reached the 30-point mark for the third time this season, all in Sun Belt Conference play. Govan scored a basket with 2:00 remaining to give WKU a 62-57 lead before FAU answered with 1:30 left on a basket by Breana Turner.

With the chance to seal the win, Chaney Means and Micah Jones missed free throws, allowing a basket by Kimberly Smith to cut the WKU lead to 62-61 with 16.1 left. Means made up for her miss seconds early by nailing two free throws with 8.0 remaining to win.

FAU (11-13, 8-8) and WKU exchanged leads six times in the second half.

The Lady Toppers cut a 5-2 lead to one at 5-4 on a basket by Illeana Johnson with 15:55 left in the first half before the Lady Toppers went 5:34 without a score and FAU built a 13-point lead at 17-4. FAU’s Latavia Dempsey scored 10 of 12 points during the 12-0 run by the Owls.

WKU finally ended the scoring drought on a basket by Jalynn McClain with 11:03 left in the opening half. WKU finally scored on consecutive baskets when a Gooch free throw, Govan basket and Ciera Woods basket gave WKU five straight points to cut the lead to seven at 21-14. Following another basket by FAU, WKU reeled off seven straight, including consecutive baskets by McGee. A three by Micah Jones with 4:01 left in the first half capped a 12-2 run and cut the lead to two.

Later in the half, three consecutive baskets by Govan gave WKU its first lead and largest lead of the first half at three, 30-27. WKU settled on a 31-30 advantage at the half after shooting 41.9 percent and holding FAU to 38.7 percent from the field before halftime.
