The last World War II barrack at Fort Knox is being restored as a way to preserve history and pay tribute to the memories of soldiers who lived in the facilities.
Ret. Col. Mike Weaver, a former state lawmaker, is in charge of the project, which will be part of the General George Patton Museum of Leadership. Weaver, who lived in one of the barracks during his basic training at Fort Knox in 1961, told The News-Enterprise that no government money was allocated for the project.
He said it's being done entirely with donations and volunteers.
So far, much of the work has centered around cleaning and removing debris that accumulated from years of neglect. He says the goal is to get the building back to its original appearance.
