WWII Purple Heart Medal Mailed to Ft. Campbell

A Purple Heart medal given to a former officer assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in World War II is being returned to Fort Campbell, Ky. The medal was mailed to the U.S. Embassy in London without a return address in July, according to the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

The medal was issued to Maj. Louis H. Cotton, who survived being injured at Normandy on June 6, 1944. He died in 1985 with no immediate surviving family members, according to the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Vermont Army National Guard Cap. Zachariah Fike, who helped track down the medal's origins, will present the Purple Heart to the Brig. Gen. Don F. Pratt Museum on Tuesday afternoon at the installation on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line.
