Ten-Digit Dialing Coming Soon to 270 Area Code

Jul 8, 2013

Phone customers in the 270 area code may use seven or 10-digit dialing starting in August as the region prepares to roll out an additional area code.

The option to use seven or 10 digits runs from Aug. 3 through Jan. 31, 2014, after which customers will be required to dial 10 digits when placing local calls. To dial long distance, callers must add a 1.

The Elizabethtown News-Enterprise reports even though use of 10 digits will be required, no additional fees are applied. A local call will remain local.

In December, the Kentucky Public Services Commission ordered an area code overlay for the 270 code region, which covers western Kentucky.

Beginning March 3, customers in the region who request new service may be assigned a 364 area code.

People in the Henderson area will have a chance Monday to give their opinions on a new area code that will be needed in western Kentucky in early 2014. The Kentucky Public Service Commission is holding meetings in several cities on the issue.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission will hold a meeting in Hopkinsville this week to explain the need for a new area code for the western half of the state. Area code 270 is projected to run out of available numbers by early 2014. There are two plans under consideration.

Parts of southern and western Kentucky have nearly exhausted the 270 area code and are in line for an additional one. The Kentucky Public Service Commission is weighing a request to make the next area code available to all new phone customers throughout the region, rather than to apply it geographically.
