Governor Steve Beshear is announcing a statewide plan to connect returning members of the Reserve, the National Guard, and other veterans with job openings in Kentucky. The program is called "Hiring Kentucky Heroes."
Gas prices are getting ready to go up again in Kentucky. On July 1, the state's gas tax will increase 2.1 cents per gallon. That means motorists will be paying nearly 30 cents in Kentucky taxes for each gallon they purchase. The increase is automatic because the state's tax is tied to the average cost of wholesale gas, which has been rising.
Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson and Kentucky’s Blue Ribbon Tax Commission are seeking public comment to help develop recommendations on overhauling the state tax code. Abramson says around 100 people attended the first of six regional public hearings Tuesday night. The commission wraps up public meetings in August and will have three months to finish the plan by a November deadline. Once complete, Abramson is hopeful the plan will pass the legislature.
Governor Steve Beshear has created a program lawmakers could not. The governor has released $4 million to be given as scholarships to Eastern Kentucky college students. Lawmakers wrestled with several scholarship proposals during the last legislative session, but an agreement was never passed.
