The excessive heat and drought in Kentucky this summer have drawn natural disaster area designations for seven counties. Surrounding counties are also affected as well as two counties each in Indiana and Tennessee.
Kentucky's teachers are being pushed to find more resources online as more and more textbooks become outdated and are not being replaced. The problem comes from an unforgiving state budget that has not allowed for full funding of textbooks in several years.
Kentucky U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell is urging White House Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske to include Hardin County in the Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. That would mean more federal resources to combat illegal drugs in an area that has seen a significant increase in drug related crimes.
