Kentucky law enforcement officers are beginning a week of traffic patrols for the Memorial Day holiday focusing on making sure motorists are wearing seat belts. The 2013 "Click It or Ticket" campaign begins Monday and runs through June 2nd.
The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety says Kentucky has an 83% seat belt usage rate. The national rate is 86%. The office says fatalities on Kentucky roadways last year totaled 746, up from 721 in 2011. It says more than half of those killed were not wearing a seat belt.
A Kentucky State Police trooper has been charged with drunken driving.
The Glasgow Daily Times cited a citation from the Cave City Police Department in reporting that 27-year-old Casey Joseph Wethington of Columbia was arrested Sunday on the charge. According to the report, Wethington was "all over the roadway" while traveling north on Dixie Highway and an officer pulled him over.
The police report said a breathalyzer test showed Wethington's blood alcohol content to be 0.2, which is higher than the legal limit of .08.
It was unclear whether Wethington had an attorney.
Forty new troopers received diplomas today at ceremonies held in Frankfort, Kentucky. The new troopers are part of the third Law Enforcement Accelerated Program. They bring the agency's total strength to a total of 948 troopers serving the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Searchers have resumed looking for a mother last seen July 4 in Otter Creek Park near Brandenburg. Kentucky State Police say 37-year-old Carrie Ruffra entered the park around 1 a.m. EDT Wednesday and the park director found her vehicle parked near a boat ramp leading to the Ohio River around 11:30 a.m. EDT that same day.
The fourth national "Take Back"initiative is collecting unwanted prescription medications today at State Police Posts across Kentucky. The Kentucky State Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency are working together on the effort, which is designed to help reduce prescription abuse .
