McConnell Wants Akin to Quit Missouri Senate Race

The highest ranking Republican in the U.S. Senate is calling on his party's candidate to abandon his Missouri campaign. Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell joins a growing number of Republicans who regard Rep. Todd Akin's chances to win the race seriously diminished following recent comments on abortion.

Corker Wins GOP Primary in Tennessee, Has Big War Chest Heading Into Fall

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker has fended off four challengers in a Republican primary to win his party's nomination for a second term. The former Chattanooga mayor faced a much easier time in his re-election bid than he did when he ran in 2006. Then he had a tough primary against two former congressmen and narrowly defeated former Democratic U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr. in an even-more bruising general election campaign.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear's expanded gambling amendment has failed in the state Senate. The measure would have allowed for a public vote on whether to legalize casinos. It fell seven votes short of the 23 it needed to move to the House, largely due to fractures in the Democratic caucus.
