Gov. Beshear Asks for Moment of Silence Friday in Honor of Newtown Victims
By Associated Press
Gov. Steve Beshear is asking Kentuckians to join in a moment of silence for victims of the Newtown, Conn., elementary school massacre.
The moment of silence will be observed at 9:30 a.m. local time Friday, one week after 20 first-graders and six adults were killed in a rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
A gunman armed with a military-style assault rifle also killed his mother at her home.
Beshear previously directed all flags at state office buildings to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy has declared Friday a day of mourning in that state and asked other states to participate in a moment of silence.
Houses of worship and other buildings with bells are encouraged to sound them 26 times.
