Open for business: "White nose bat syndrome" not impacting Mammoth Cave

By Dan Modlin

Bowling Green, Ky – Officials at Mammoth Cave National Park want the public to know they are open for the Fourth of July weekend. Some national media reports have indicated that caves in the Southeast are closed because of the spread of white nose syndrome in bats. Mammoth Cave National Park Public Information Officer Vickie Carson says those closures do not include Mammoth Cave, "White nose syndrome has not been found in Kentucky .or specifically in Mammoth Cave." Carson says National Park personnel are taking several precautions to minimize the chance of white nose syndrome spreading to the Park and the cave. She says several people have called the park after hearing national media reports, because they were concerned that their cave tours would be cancelled. Carson says, "Mammoth Cave is open."
