Shoplifting Suspect Shot by Bowling Green Police

More charges have been filed against an Illinois man who was shot by Bowling Green police Saturday night while reportedly trying to shoplift a rifle.

Police were called to Cabela's Sporting Goods just before 8:00 Saturday night for a man who had taken an unloaded rifle off a shelf in the store, placed it inside his pants and went into the restroom. The man, later identified as 33 year old Elliott Cummings of Naperville, Illinois, then exited the store with the weapon still in his pants.

Cummings was shot at least once and wounded in the buttocks area by Bowling Green police officer Clifton Phelps in the store's parking lot after he allegedly raised the rifle in a threatening manner at police after being told to stop.

Phelps is a three year veteran of the Bowling Green police force.

Cummings was taken to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville with non-life threatening injuries.

After being released from Skyline Sunday, Cummings was arrested for an active warrant from the state of Illinois on a probation violation for a shoplifting charges. Charges are also pending from the state of Kentucky.
