State Police Still Looking for a Break in Ellis Killing

Bardstown Police Department

Investigators have issued a new appeal for information in the unsolved murder of a Bardstown Police officer nearly 20 months ago.

Thirty-three year old Officer Jason Ellis was shot to death in an ambush as he got out of his cruiser to remove tree limbs that had been placed on a Nelson County highway exit ramp.

Investigators have followed up on hundreds of leads, but Kentucky State Police Lieutenant Jeremy Thompson says there’s been no solid first-hand information.

The reward in the case now exceeds $185,000.

Thompson says it’s believed that there’s someone in the community who can help.

“What I’m confident in, is that because of the crime occurring here, and that it has not been duplicated somewhere else in the same manner, that there must be some local tie. You don’t just go to Exit 34 off the Bluegrass Parkway, commit a crime like this, set that location up and not be familiar in some way with that area", Thompson said during a press conference streamed live by WAVE Television.

Jason Ellis was gunned down on the early morning of May 25, 2013, as he was heading home after his work shift.
